VR & AR

Nordic’s ultra-low-latency and low power wireless solutions ideal for VR/AR controllers

Nordic’s multi-protocol Bluetooth and proprietary 2.4GHz SoCs sit at the heart of many of the world’s most popular and high-performing virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headset controllers.

These work in tandem one or more VR or AR headsets. Nordic’s low power wireless technology also gives VR and AR controllers the ultra-long battery life gamers demand, expect and deserve.

In VR and AR proprietary 2.4GHz is best

Thanks to the multiprotocol radio embedded into each Nordic Bluetooth SoC, customers can leverage Nordic’s state-of-the-art 2.4GHz proprietary technology as well as implement the highest report rate for VR and AR controllers (up to 8K). This allows seamless synchronization across devices.

Each customer can fully customize their stack and operating software too, enabling them to finely differentiate their products and add unique features and value for customers.

Nordic’s nRF Desktop reference design tool is the starting point for VR/AR applications. Currently supporting nRF52 SoCs, it is ready for Nordic’s forthcoming nRF54 Series. This enables VR and AR controllers that need to send high amounts of data – e.g. from a gyro or accelerometer – to deploy the nRF54 Series’ 4Mbps radio mode. When combined with Nordic’s 7002 Wi-Fi companion IC, this will allow mixing and matching of proprietary 2.4GHz with Wi-Fi protocols if required.

Depending on use case, Nordic SoCs can also be used with Nordic’s nRF21 Range Extender family to further increase TX transmission power and sensitivity, which can be beneficial for six degrees of freedom (6DoF) VR and AR applications.
