Apple HomeKit-compatible smart lock Kwikset Premis employs Nordic’s nRF52832 SoC to enable keyless door entry for multiple authorized users

Nordic Semiconductor today announces that Lake Forest, CA-based lock manufacturer, Kwikset, has selected Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth® Low Energy System-on-Chip (SoC) for its Premis touchscreen electronic deadbolt, an Apple HomeKit-compatible lock for domestic security applications.

Premis is a touchscreen deadbolt that works with Apple HomeKit to provide homeowners an easy, secure way to control their home security from Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) compatible iOS smartphones and tablets. With Premis, homeowners can unlock and lock the door using Bluetooth LE wireless connectivity provided by the nRF52832 SoC. The smart lock can also be controlled using Apple’s personal assistant, Siri®, or the Apple Home and Kwikset Premis iOS apps.

From the Premis app the homeowner can easily send a user code to anyone who needs access to a building fitted with the Premis deadbolt. Premis can hold up to 30 unique user codes at one time, and access can be scheduled for specific times and days, while user codes can also be easily disabled or deleted. From the app, the homeowner can view lock activity and lock history, as well as receive notifications when the lock is used. Lock status can also be controlled and monitored via third generation (and later) Apple TVs.

Four AA batteries provide approximately one year of operation between replacement, thanks in part to the ultra low power operating characteristics of the Nordic nRF52832 SoC.

This is Kwikset’s first time working with Nordic but given the level of world class support from its global technical team and its willingness to work with third-party developers to move the product development process along, we look forward to working with the Nordic team again.

Nordic’s nRF52832 Bluetooth LE SoC, a member of Nordic’s sixth generation of ultra low power (ULP) wireless connectivity solutions, combines a 64MHz, 32-bit ARM® Cortex® M4F processor with a 2.4GHz multiprotocol radio (support for Bluetooth 5, ANT™ and proprietary 2.4GHz RF software) featuring -96dB RX sensitivity, with 512kB Flash memory and 64kB RAM. When launched, the SoC was the world’s highest performance single-chip Bluetooth LE solution, delivering up to 60 percent more generic processing power, offering 10 times the Floating Point performance and twice the DSP performance compared to competing solutions.

“This is Kwikset’s first time working with Nordic but given the level of world class support from its global technical team and its willingness to work with third-party developers to move the product development process along, we look forward to working with the Nordic team again,” says Ashton Good, Senior Product Manager, Kwikset.

Premis is a transitional-style smart lock available in Satin Nickel and Venetian Bronze finishes for $229 MSRP at select retailers. A contemporary styled deadbolt will be available in 2017.
